Avalanche warning for region Lofoten og Vesterålen Tuesday 14.02.2023

Danger level 2 - Moderate avalanche danger

Published:
Snow stability decreases when the snow gets wet. Avoid areas with recent wind slabs, they can be unstable. In steep terrain with wet, loose snow, small wet avalanches are possible.
  • The danger is greatest until Tuesday morning

Avalanche problems

Wet snow (slab avalanches)

You can trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Water pooling in/above snow layers

Wet snow (loose snow avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on a few steep slopes. Avalanches are relatively harmless to people, but can knock you off balance. Can be dangerous close to terrain traps. (size 1)

Loose snow

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Monday 13. February 2023

Mountain weather

Monday 13. February 2023

8 mm precipitation, up to 20 mm in the most exposed areas. Precipitation as rain. Gale from west, changing to fresh breeze from the southwest during the afternoon. -3 °C to 2 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Tuesday 14. February 2023

4 mm precipitation, up to 10 mm in the most exposed areas. Precipitation as rain. Strong breeze from southwest. 0 °C to 3 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
